People seem very attached to the incest taboo, but there’s no particularly coherent argument for why it is sustainable within a hedonistic individualist moral frame.

I’ve encountered three main arguments: 1) Genetics. Fine but given that most sex is not for procreation, irrelevant. If it would be bad for offspring to result, that’s the case with most sex acts today! The answe isn’t a universal taboo but birth control + abortion if necessary.

2) Negative social effects. Again, not specific to incest. People having affairs with each other’s spouses e.g. is pretty bad in this way, but not particularly taboo anymore.

3) Westermarck effect. Far from supporting an incest taboo, if we were to take its effects as normative, sex with blood relatives would be fine as long as you don’t grow up around them.
