"Going to do some public writing" is one of my favorite academic lines. As opposed to what? The lorem ipsum filler used to pad a CV and make a tenure case? And then the "public" is usually something like the NYRB or some leftist magazine reaching a "general public" of thousands

Just as I stopped grading and testing, because the entire system was fraudulent, I also came to believe - indeed always believed - that your intellectual work product needed to be made public, and if it couldn't survive there, it should remain private. In the closet, if you will

That's right. The work of reusing your work. Many of them write comparatively little relative to me or someone else they'd consider a "hack" (but they'll still rip Zizek for self plagiarism)

They also promote the 3-4 "public" pieces (usually just book chapters or some other promotional materials) aggressively, giving the impression they are very productive.
