usually the most notable consequence of some high-visibility event (in millennial media outlets anyway) -- viral take, mostly fruitless protest or hashtag -- is that one or two Leaders will get a book deal, some of the top followers get clout, and everyone else gets an indulgence

this doesn't make those leaders or top followers "grifters" in the correct sense of that term. It's not a grift if the activity has the outcome that the primary organizers hoped it would have, of elevating their brands

That’s right. The truly sincere percentage of their base probably doesn’t exceed 50%. But they’re definitely not grifting themselves — they see their role as doing well by doing good
