What's funny about the whole thing is that dudes like me that don't know the inside baseball just think it's so bizarre that everyone is so obsessed with this sweet Australian woman

You're better off not knowing, but we're trying to make things clearer by elaborating on what the Left(TM) is and how its aims differ from a genuine working class politics. Its players aren't grifters--some are successful--but the work they're doing doesn't advance our project

The left formations we see here, especially as this current youth movement grows old, are Left(TM) businesses. They are in the business of selling socialism. This is unlikely to result in nationalization of industry, etc so you are likely correct

I don't consider it a grift, because that implies they're cheating or scamming. What they're doing is standard operating procedure, what anyone in that structure would do. To call out "grifting" is like singling out Watergate as the only scandal, as if everything else wasn't

Nothing these actors say ever means anything. Only their actions, observed post hoc, provide any clue to understanding their process, as you've noted. Not only can they tailor a message to micro-constituencies, but the message is meaningless beyond its immediate emotional impact
