The left formations we see here, especially as this current youth movement grows old, are Left(TM) businesses. They are in the business of selling socialism. This is unlikely to result in nationalization of industry, etc so you are likely correct
I don't consider it a grift, because that implies they're cheating or scamming. What they're doing is standard operating procedure, what anyone in that structure would do. To call out "grifting" is like singling out Watergate as the only scandal, as if everything else wasn't

I'm not fond of the players -- nothing personal of course -- but it's the game I really despise. And I can't see a way out beyond de-mystifying this state of affairs and seeing what the impact of that process is. Likely nothing, but nothing is always what happens
