90% of the time, perhaps 99% of the time, your typical 60 or 90 minute documentary is less informative than a wikipedia article that can be skimmed in 3-5 minutes

occasionally these things compile footage of real characters that needed to be preserved for the record, or they're made by someone like werner herzog or errol morris or penelope spheeris, or they contain "new revelations" and fresh interviews with major players...but usually not

mostly they're just white noise you can play in the background of your ever-diminishing life, those leisure hours when you're too tired to think and just want some glimpses of "nostalgia footage" ("I sorta remember that!") accompanied by quick cuts and fast-paced narration
