they may have been sorta watching the matches -- the workrate marks are an exception, they were grading matches -- but most were tracking the gossip, deaths, etc. That stuff still draws a number: obits are my bread and butter. That VICE "dark side" series covers well trod ground

This is why I won't touch wrestling and politics takes, among many other reasons (some I've already published). I see a lot of people who cover other stuff, usually politics, talking wrestling through this lens plus skimming the current product. That commentary is so cheesy

Even today, many people track the "labor status" of wrestling -- who is going where. Look, almost nothing has changed since a few of us wrote long pieces about it in 2014. A few more buyers, but it'll always be difficult to organize a sport where owners can push the stars

Aren't most people just most fond of the period they were young/adolescent in? Like if you were in puberty in the late 90s you are going to react a certain way to shattered glass, "jabroni," or a sock with a face drawn in sharpie.

The 90s were an interesting time because the wrestling viewership was mostly grown-up 80s viewers, hence the shift to an "R" rating, more Jerry Springer-esque content, etc. And those fans were interested in backstage antics.

attitude was a pretty bad era for the actual wrestling, but the spectacle was great

I wanted Savage to beat Hogan in '89 because it was real, and I wanted to see my favorite wrestler become the new #1 guy. I wanted Savage to beat Hogan in '98 because I felt Hogan owed it to Savage to lay down for him. Two totally different feelings and eras.

So... as a kid... I so wanted Andre to win at 3. Thought he deserved it (and, he did!) Made me so happy when the Colossal Connection beat Demolition.

I started watching earnestly in fall of 99. I’m the sort of person who arbitrarily picks something and stays loyal. So I faithfully watched WCW till it’s dying day and never followed “the dirt sheets.” I was so confused.

I had no idea what Bischoff was on about when he asked Sid about scissors.
