I get that that's a specific case -- some people may not want paid while on unemployment either -- but attacking publications for refusing to not pay was way outside the scope of what I was covering and there was no organic way to address that by way of aside.

Also: many publications are happy to not pay you. Just don't invoice them. You won't get paid. I guarantee it. That's the Bateman promise. And the Goodmenproject is an example of a non-paying "content farm" that's still around

No, just smaller. I make good money writing for publications that exist at the whims of their well-off patrons. Stuff like Bloomberg, FT, the NYT, and the WSJ provide valuable info to the 1% behind paywalls. The rest of it? Who knows. Terminal, I'd say.
