One of the reasons I write a lot of obituaries is because my father talked endlessly about his own impending demise from as far back as I can remember. He didn't believe people died "before their time" -- he thought they died "on time, their lifetime." Time's up, in other words
The time you got was your lifetime, and that was all the time you got. The time in which you had the time of your life. He died at 74, his brother at 57, his maternal grandfather at 60, his mother at 51, and many other relatives far earlier. Death was a constant presence.
