Why is it virtually impossible to have any kind of thinking happen in leftist publications?

take out leftist specifically and the answer is The Internet. instantaneous publication means the vast majority of magazines/publications are no longer imagined communities. indistinguishable from forums posting (which can be great but 99% of the time isn't)

It’s the exact opposite of this. The internet makes communities too close-knit, everyone wants to be just the right mix of the right kind of edgy-radical without offending any of the key in-group people. And everything is immediately visible to everyone.

They do all seem to line up in lockstep on issues they should be questioning or at least thinking deeply about. Instead they focus on excommunication and ostracism to build in-group loyalty
