But there are real perks that come along with jumping on the platform as a follower - the dopamine rush of being a smug asshole, moral superiority in a few simple sentences, etc. That seems to be the driver for a lot of folks.

i think you're right on the money. i think that's the payoff, especially if you're bored, sufficiently well off or from a rich family but downwardly mobile, and want the thrill of "doing the work" and condescending to other who don't "do the work"
