In the past three decades, I'm not sure I ever failed to finish a meal and I certainly never threw food away. But my dad was obsessed with stretching food: he threw flour into meat and eggs to maximize yield. He fried and ate peels. He checked the garbage disposal for chunks
That man would and did eat trash. The stuff Joe Exotic fed the lions...he had me pulling from the produce and meat areas at Albertson's and Jewel, when I worked there. He ate mangos like apples. He ate bananas green ("like a monkey") with peel on.
He had some impressive ways of stretching food. If given an old, dry, shitty grocery store sheet cake, he'd throw slices of it in a frying pan with butter and heavy cream. In fact, that was his preferred method for extending the life of old baked goods -- "dad's sweetcake"
He had experienced legit caloric deficits throughout his youth. He was a big, wide-framed kid, and I guess hunger was the leitmotif of his childhood. The behaviors of someone like that are fascinating
