This issue is a timeless conundrum. While I agree mostly that meritocracy is sham cover for institutional advantage, it's also true that there is no system that can acknowledge the difference between competent work & incompetence w/out some standard of measure. i.e. weighlifting.
The results of a powerlifting meet or carpentry project are far clearer than the results of a traditional liberal arts education

The fact is, I learned everything I do now in six years of homeschooling. The rest of it was just pushing paper. Thirty minutes with my uncle was worth years in the classroom. That's not the case for everyone, but it worked out fine for me
