Even in good times, whenever people would talk to me about pill box hats or how cool the shoulder pads were on suits back in such and such decade, I was always thinking, "you know, I bet most people want food, shelter, clothing, and the chance to take care of their families."

Seems like it. But it "works well" if one consider what the goals of its "power players" are. It seems to work just fine for that purpose
