Noah on the self-published books? No. This dude, yes. When I was close to one of these trade press deals, the number being discussed was in the neighborhood of 15k

If your book doesn't make enough money to cover the advance do they take some of it back?

No, but they can if you don't actually finish and deliver the manuscript, though given how poor most writers are, that's irrelevant.

I think I would classify Noah's books as vanity projects

Don't think that's fair, Chris. Noah's legitimately trying to make a buck.

Yes, Oliver has explained some things to me. You know I tend not to give Noah the benefit of the doubt, nor does he to me.

no, not at all. self publishing is definitely a way to try to get some income. It's worked okay a couple of times. I do also like collecting them and putting them together. I think essay collections are as legitimate an artistic project as anything.

I think it's a good idea. If something comes on the back end, all the better. I told @RevSw1m about this approach

Conventional book publishing is a waste of time

I would love to do a book where I got an advance. agents seem pretty uninterested in all my ideas though, so I'm stuck where I'm stuck.

It ate up a whole year for me and depressed my freelance earnings, but all I got were some nice publisher rejections. I feel like publishing companies need to buy the manuscripts that fit their needs, and capture the voices they want, and that's not me at the present
