It's hard to say whether the better scare story has been "Bernie is the frontrunner, so watch out, Dad" or "Coronavirus will kill 5 billion so hoard all that toilet paper." Both are nonsense, but good for the pageviews and so on.

Covid is not a scare story. We are staring down millions of excess deaths from either industrial shutdown or inadequate mitigation.
I think the (domestic) media focus of it on the US, as opposed to Nigeria, etc. is misguided. Also, there's very little careful breakdown of the young needing to do their part for the elderly/infirm domestically, which is absent from the national character anyway
