Noah on the self-published books? No. This dude, yes. When I was close to one of these trade press deals, the number being discussed was in the neighborhood of 15k

No, but they can if you don't actually finish and deliver the manuscript, though given how poor most writers are, that's irrelevant.

If you can move some self published copy you've already sold to other online publications, you're ahead of the game, so it makes sense if your endgame is to maximize dollars
