I think Rowling qualifies as an underdog, because few in our society face a grimmer financial future than brilliant English majors.

Interesting. So it could be argued that she is a categorical underdog. I would still contend that she is no underdog relative to the majority of the others who endeavor to do what she does.

Russell Wilson, somehow an NFL quarterback at 5'10"-5'11", is an "underdog" in that same sense, though. The odds of getting the job he has are minuscule, but he was about as well prepared for it as anyone who throws a ball for a living could be, height notwithstanding
