What would you suggest as an alternative term, then, if bodybuilding is only to be used in reference to competitive bodybuilding?

Its usage in journalistic wrapsheets suggests that it has very little to do with competitive beefcaking and much more to do with some factor that gets spotted as one of several other testimonials to pull a spotty record into sharper toxicological focus.

That’s correct. I’d prefer they use “weight lifter” (not “weightlifter”) or “physical culturist” but, again, the primary point was that “bodybuilder” is not just used too much (I can’t control that) but too often for purposes of sensationalizing the subject’s life story
