my phd was in legal history ... and i wouldn't even dream of plowing into the kind of policy discussions people blithely have online. way too complicated. i don't know the lay of the land
everyone interested enough to read the story is essentially a "future writer" of the story, or believes themselves more knowledgeable than the writer...i get emails reading "that's the kind of stuff i'd write but i'd say blah blah blah"
