Whenever I see an online feature making the rounds, I don’t think “huh...this is big...this is national news.” Instead, I think “here’s another inning of inside baseball played by 500 more or less interconnected freelancers, staffers, and other media-adjacent culture vultures”

I like many writers and have friends who write stuff like this but it’s tough not to look at it and think: does any of this stuff matter even a little?

I’m not one to talk, I used to read The Economist because I thought it would make me smarter and I used to think keeping up with the minutae of the news made me a better citizen somehow

I was in the same boat. I used to be able to rattle off the names of ministers and sub ministers and world currencies etc. But now? I can't even bring myself to care about the nerd-trivial details of sports I'm paid reasonably well to cover
