As of the Deadspinpocalypse, I don't believe there's anyone doing wrestling coverage with indemnification against lawsuits in their back pocket. As in if Terry Taylor sued me Monday, G/O would cover me. Hopefully that changes back soon. Not just for my sake, not by a longshot.

That's part of the nature of places moving toward 100% 1099 labor -- investigative, topical work isn't great from a cost-benefit perspective. Historical pieces and largely harmless/positive or just offbeat features are much safer. Journalism goes kayfabe!

In 18+ years I believe there was one instance where a publication I worked for was threatened with accusations of defamation. Cannot recall the context. But I’m also confident the places I freelance for wouldn’t leave me culpable and exposed.

That’s what I was getting at before about editorial due diligence. It’s the front lines of having that coverage. I always prefer reporting for places with actual protocols in place. And try to use my best judgment and experience in the act of reporting.
