Crispin didn't have the early experiences that I did, where my father normalized non-binary behavior with long discussions of how attractive Bluto and Bugs Bunny looked in drag, constant re-viewings of the "money shot" in The Crying Game, etc.
Not to mention Grandpa Bateman's eyes twinkling when he spoke of faraway past times with the non-binary "comfort" folks of the east, his "submarining" days on the USS Sea Lion having revolved around this type of shore leave. It was a different sort of youth, to be sure
