The turning point for me on all this was when my agent and I shopped a book proposal with all these “buzzwords” in there along with a section listing “influencers” whose asses I needed to be smooching in exchange for vague blurbs unrelated to the book (which they wouldn’t read)

That was around the time I decided that since I interact with zero literary people in my real life, and work a corporate job, selling a book to a “press” was a very low priority. I just “do the work” ya know

Meeting these "literary influencers" was pretty gross because I soon realized they wouldn't boost my brand if I were drowning and a retweet would save my life. But some of them have dm'd me, shared some loathsome cynical workplace thoughts with me, etc. It's fascinating.
