I mean, kayfabe has come back to the extent that ESPN’s coverage is a bit like the publicity coverage wrestling used to get in the 50s, and fans who “know better” are now throwing themselves into booing and cheering per kayfabe rules

That's the thing. WWE production has turned into a show geared toward a new set of fans more into the narrative than the actual wrestling as a sport (at least to my eyes) and that makes me highly doubt they changing direction as the WWE seems to have recaptured its mojo a little
