my dad would be telling me to eat every meal like it's my last supper and my mom would be cooking dinner and tomorrow's breakfast while i was eating today's lunch, so having a "normal" diet was not an option

i remember eating many back to back "lunch-and-dinners" so that my mom could get all the dishes washed by 2 p.m. and we could get an early start on the next day

meanwhile, my dad was able to get me to eat pretty much anything at an early age by saying "just take a bite of that and imagine it's the last bite you're ever going to take, because it could be"

Will never forget at age ten eating seconds of meatloaf at Smorga Bob’s buffet while my parents debated the sausage-scramble vs. banana pancake question for next morning’s breakfast. Thankfully the restaurant’s second-hand smoke suppressed the urge to go back for thirds.

That was a fascinating phenomenon most kids of today won't get to experience. I usually waited tables in the Golden Corral smoking section in Raleigh, a heavy smoking city in the 90s, and even though I was pretty resistant to it, church sundays put up WW1-esque toxic clouds
