I believe the drive for power was largely to gratify that desire (and little else), and the boredom/lassitude caused by the resulting wealth enabled him to pursue this dream with impunity
I think the only reason Dennis Hastert did anything in politics was to cover up his earlier bad actions. Even for people who don’t have such base motives, like me, the desires that motivate my labor are sad/banal (eating two pizzas while watching a bloodbath cartoon)
