journalists talking about how fronting their own expenses serves as a barrier to entry for the underprivileged while still...telling us they front their own expenses...is not the best way to knock down said barrier

maybe leave those stories alone and either a) hope a publication can afford to pay someone who can't front said expenses to cover the story or b) cover the expenses and be honest that this is kind of a fun postgrad type travel sort of thing, "tourism"
