we all need the 21-year course i got from my old man in how to deal with the fact that nearly everyone is trying to pick our pockets except for the handful of folks who might be temporarily lining our pockets (and they've usually got an angle, too).

my dad, who stole from everyone in the family, was also constantly being scammed and ripped off. "scamming and being scammed" was his mantra. often the scams seemed to have no underlying purpose, but were instead just ways of passing the time
