Honestly, although we say reading can transcend this or that...reading is a quintessential bougie signifier. I refuse to speak about books in public settings for the most part, and actively recoil when someone associates goodness with book reading.

Only in the hallowed halls of lib arts academia and on journalism Twitter is book reading > math, logic, the trades, crafts (unless currently in vogue because they're hygge or Kondo or something), athletic activity (the moving body is communicating in its own way), music, etc.

I remember a friend of mine telling me he and his journo buddies were making a difference..."here's what we're reading now, we're doing the work." That was the first time I'd heard of reading, a leisure activity for those who have the time to do it, described as "doing the work"
