As a professor, my most controversial position was that I didn't care at all about plagiarism. a) they at least found some material b) it was probably better written than most of what I received c) privileging "originality" is a very bougie and culturally insensitive position
Very very rarely is there some actual intent of any kind when it comes to this stuff, more often just confusion

Exactly. The concept of accidental plagiarism doesn’t make sense to me. In the student handbook, it’s listed under academic dishonesty. But if it’s an accident, there’s no intent to deceive. Fix the mistake and move on.

And if it means that occasionally a clever student gets over on me, okay. Better that happen than I flunk a kid out of school because they didn’t understand citation protocols well enough.
