As a professor, my most controversial position was that I didn't care at all about plagiarism. a) they at least found some material b) it was probably better written than most of what I received c) privileging "originality" is a very bougie and culturally insensitive position

the way i see it, the legitimate reason citations are necessary is to back up claims the writer makes. if something seems questionable or fantastic or if the reader desires clarification or raw data to verify it for themselves, citations are invaluable

analyzing cited works can allow the reader to develop their own position and produce an opposing or concurring work, or searching for works that have similar citations can also yield similar or differing opinions
