“I want our readers to turn to one column and say, ‘I just hate this guy, and I'm never going to read him again,’ and then turn to another one and say, ‘Man, I love this!’” Which is what I think Russ is doing with Splice Today.

“Smith would be notable only for his 1940s sort of normalness if he weren’t so eccentric too.” I that was what made Russ interesting?

Very interesting article. Unless Russ was very different back then, I can't see him wanting to be part of "the scene," schmoozing w/drunken or sober fakes. From my experience as a writer for him, I think he likes authentic encounters, real people wherever they might come from.
