The weather window for the last ascent can be as narrow as 4-6 hours, so the people in the photo can be the only 50 who ascend that season. It’s obviously not an everyday line.
My concern isn't the volume, as some others who have discussed this photo have remarked upon, merely that it captures an enormous investment of money in one photo
Everest expeditions start as low as $30k, more comfortable ones at 60-100k. The whole line is therefore worth around $3-5m. On a less black and white side: part of those goes to the local community and the nepalese government earns several million a year by selling permits.
Yeah, but what if everyone up there stayed home and sent a check to aid people in Nepal instead? I think that would help a lot more people, plus save time, jet fuel and keep a natural wonder cleaner.
there are surely some positive externalities, much as there are for yacht builders and yacht crews, but is this direction of resources wise in an aggregate sense? People can do what they want, but those behaviors aren't above review or criticism. And is $3m an insubstantial sum?
$3m is certainly a drop in the bucket versus $3b or $3 trillion, but widening the frame doesn't necessarily moot consideration of the expenditure. It's fascinating in the same way the super-yacht life is fascinating, something in which more people would indulge if they could
