the lack of money circulating within the left press ($50-$100 a piece gets you a thumbsucking "hot take" at best) & on the left generally makes it a hotbed for exploitation (small media empires built by cunning cheapskates, grifters mouthing cliches for peanuts, unpaid interns)

grifter and hustler bosses of nonprofits and magazines can always fall back on "some things are more important than money" and just not pay money.

But let me tell you what I've learned in HR: in the world in which we inhabit, which isn't a good one, nothing is more important than payday, the paycheck, a wage based on 2080 hours worked per year. Nothing. And people will do anything for that money, even if their rates vary
