Write the proposal. You have to do the little things in between to generate income. The larger projects thus take longer, but you have knowledge of and interest in things that appeal to more than a tiny niche audience. Take advantage.

I think that's the right strategy. Hard to conceptualize that big picture, but sensible nevertheless

Get a few of your smartest friends to tell you what all of your writing is really about, the impact it has. It helps to have other eyeballs on our work. We are always too close to it. So hard to get that bird's eye view. I so get it.
