The weather window for the last ascent can be as narrow as 4-6 hours, so the people in the photo can be the only 50 who ascend that season. It’s obviously not an everyday line.
My concern isn't the volume, as some others who have discussed this photo have remarked upon, merely that it captures an enormous investment of money in one photo

Everest expeditions start as low as $30k, more comfortable ones at 60-100k. The whole line is therefore worth around $3-5m. On a less black and white side: part of those goes to the local community and the nepalese government earns several million a year by selling permits.

Yeah, but what if everyone up there stayed home and sent a check to aid people in Nepal instead? I think that would help a lot more people, plus save time, jet fuel and keep a natural wonder cleaner.
