I’ve got bosses now who do the work alongside the rank and file and I’m not even sure what to make of it. They remember details and execute work in an efficient manner. It’s an alien experience.

Generally, you promote people to roles like deans if they’ve shown staying power and can wear a suit but are mush-minded and have no other skills, so the idea of a “working boss” or “paperwork boss” (which I suppose I am) always comes as a surprise

The first working boss I ever saw was the dude who ran the Golden Corral where I landed my first job. He had studied food service management in college (!!!) and could do any task in the restaurant better than the employees. I stayed there four years as a result

My dad, for all his faults, was also a working boss when he did work, and when he didn’t, my brother was the working boss, since the Chrysler dealership rarely had any other employees
