much of adulthood consists of listening attentively as people rave about restaurants you know are mediocre and recommend movies/ books you have no desire to engage with

I dunno, it may be you're only speaking with the majority of adults: those that never grew up. I've found this to be the most shocking thing about adulthood: there are few adults.
Yes, I only encounter these people in passing. What's left of the "inner circle" is nothing like that
