As long as "writing for the internet" means "2k in side money," my desire to sell and publish a book remains low because I don't hang out with people who give a crap about that

Out here in "the provinces," being able to say "I have an agent" or "I'm shopping a book" doesn't carry much social/aesthetic/brand building value, but having extra money to build a big back porch is real cool

If I traveled in circles where people talked about "hot" writers (?????) and the "best" parties, that would surely be different, as I would be dropping names and almost-true boasts with the rest of the smart set

I doubt you would. Not in your nature. When I published NYPress, I strongly recommended to our writers not to hang out with other journalists, lest they become friends and warp their critical judgment.

I also don't think I could continue producing meaningful writing, since I would end up "writing to the middle" like the rest of them, all peddling the same thinkable thinkpieces and thumbsucking takes. I am too much of a homebody/ "provincial" for that
