Out here in "the provinces," being able to say "I have an agent" or "I'm shopping a book" doesn't carry much social/aesthetic/brand building value, but having extra money to build a big back porch is real cool

If I traveled in circles where people talked about "hot" writers (?????) and the "best" parties, that would surely be different, as I would be dropping names and almost-true boasts with the rest of the smart set

I suppose the twenty or so years I spent educating myself to "paint my masterpiece" (in Bobdylan-ese) left me like the young lawyer in Chekhov's The Bet, but I'm cool with that

I think you could write a really cool book, but would anyone other than us over-educated meatheads buy it? Kind of a small market segment. Not really Oprah Book Club material.

It's growing but still far from "yuge." People might learn a thing or two from YouTube, but reading a full book, even a short one? It's a smaller number. I reach more meatheads with the articles
