So! The response to the late night TV piece has been overwhelming, to say the least. I'm deeply appreciative of everyone who said it nailed something they've been feeling for years—especially the other TV writers who said this.https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/how-liberal-late-night-talk-shows-became-a-comedy-sinkhole …

I'd like to take a moment to go through some of the other stuff I've been hearing as the article goes around. One common reply—both from people sympathetic to the premise and those hostile to it—is a lament that I only spoke to two writers, one of whom isn't in late night.

Frankly, I was beyond lucky to get my main late-night source, and I was prepared to write the essay without his invaluable input, in which case it would be a lot easier to dismiss what I was saying. I also don't believe he's an outlier.

He's also not just some bitter dude, despite his disillusionment with the late night industry. Trust me when I say he is leaps and bounds funnier than anything you see on network TV past 11pm. He's going to be just fine.

Another friend in late night TV told me that two writers (just one in late night) doesn't establish a pattern. Maybe not! But it's risky for anyone in this job to speak out. Not that I consider what I wrote this grandiose, but I guess you could think of him as a whistleblower.

Replying to @MilesKlee
This is a critical point that many folks don't realize. I'm fortunate to get one wrestler or bodybuilder, much less several, to speak out against their interest given that most people are only willing to do "publicity" that will advance their careers. One source speaks volumes

Most "interviews" with "big names" are really just carefully-vetted publicity filler, which is something MEL is especially good at avoiding. I've got many friends who "place" stories -- you met one of them -- and often the entire story is just "placed," pre-written content.
