Another friend in late night TV told me that two writers (just one in late night) doesn't establish a pattern. Maybe not! But it's risky for anyone in this job to speak out. Not that I consider what I wrote this grandiose, but I guess you could think of him as a whistleblower.
This is a critical point that many folks don't realize. I'm fortunate to get one wrestler or bodybuilder, much less several, to speak out against their interest given that most people are only willing to do "publicity" that will advance their careers. One source speaks volumes
Most "interviews" with "big names" are really just carefully-vetted publicity filler, which is something MEL is especially good at avoiding. I've got many friends who "place" stories -- you met one of them -- and often the entire story is just "placed," pre-written content.
It's symptomatic of the larger cultural problem that people are more attached to their wealth than their values.
