I'm not sure why folks are upset that a twitter component would be 20% of a college journalism grade when discussion of what a freelancer is like online plays a significant part in commissioning stories and accepting pitches at almost every newsroom I've ever worked in.

For better or worse, almost every journalism job I've ever gotten came out of relationships that I made on Twitter, getting my ideas and work in front of editors and managers who would have otherwise missed it.

I've found that, as a freelancer in a distant city, using Twitter less (since '16) and regularly purging my content has paid dividends. It might be different if I needed full time work, though
