I do tons of deep fitness dives, have a pretty good base of fitness connections, am probably as strong as anyone writing in the mainstream (as opposed to "muscle") media, and yet am largely unknown to both fitness folks and people who follow the media

The people who periodically "discover" my stuff think it's good -- and I believe it is, because I try to answer the questions my sixteen year old self had in an intelligent way -- but I remain largely out of cite when this stuff bubbles out to the major publications

Of course, editors from these big pubs occasionally hit me up too, but with one or two exceptions, they want some watered down trend piece any intern could write. And journos on bigger beats who know of me ask for my sources or insights to expedite their writing process

I mean, I have been thinking about the stuff I cover not just in terms of process or "nerd trivia" but rather in terms of cultural implications...since I was a little kid. Every story I've written is connected to the big story I've always wanted to tell

I guess if I have any real desire left as far as writing and journalism go, it would be to transcend this "Simpson, eh?" / Groundhog Day status and not just occupy a beat but shape a conversation. That's my faint and sorta romantic hope
