I've watched a few of these "brands" blow up over the years, and pretty soon they're toeing some cautious Twitter party line so toothless it would make a presidential candidate blush

You've noted before that that's how many people like to communicate. Just nodding along and "liking" agreeable, recognizable strings of words. "Tweet tweet tweeting away with nary a thought great or small to essay..."
