in response to the upcoming "cold snap," my mom's husband announced: a) he was "cutting" the central heat to 60 F /15.6 C to "let the furnace breathe" b) he would be heating a small area around himself and his beer with three space heaters hooked into a surge protector

this is similar to his use of air conditioning during "heat waves." he'll open the windows, raise the thermostat to 85, and plug several box fans into a single surge protector.

truly a product of his place/time. my mother simply adds more layers of clothing. and there's no reason for this or some of the other stuff he does, like putting "sweaters" on all the indoor pipes. and they're both fairly well-off pensioners.

My grandparents also do weird shit to save money when they don't need to. It's kind of funny but also really frustrating.

Yes, they're trying to maximize, but all the wrong things and at the cost of great discomfort
