1/ In 2012, single mother Laqueanda Reneau received 15 vehicle tickets from the City of Chicago, including seven $200 citations for not having a city sticker. By last summer, she owed the city $6,700 in unpaid tickets, late fines, and impound fees. http://bit.ly/2Cq2vHy pic.twitter.com/J0Bd3ucZkt

2/ For Chicago’s working poor, a single unpaid parking ticket can quickly spiral out of control. In Chicago, motorists owe $1.45 billion in unpaid fines—about 70 times what ticket debt is in Los Angeles and 6 times what it is in NYC.http://bit.ly/2Cq2vHy

3/ These fees mean big bucks for Chicago, which made more than $200 million on parking tickets in 2016. http://bit.ly/2Cq2vHy pic.twitter.com/iNW2eBT7gf

4/ What’s more, the fines disproportionately burden black Chicagoans, analysis by @ProPublicaIL (and co-published with Mother Jones) shows: 8 of the 10 ZIP codes with the highest ticket debt per adult are majority black.pic.twitter.com/TVsBiLLFZ9

5/ Filing bankruptcy, as Reneau later did, can offer a temporary reprieve. But the problem has recently worsened. @ProPublicaIL found that 10,000 Chicagoans go bankrupt every year thanks to fines that disproportionately target poor & minority residents. http://bit.ly/2Cq2vHy pic.twitter.com/Mcl8gKVVIA

6/ Bankruptcy let Reneau legally drive again, in the short-term. But in the long-term, the bankruptcy system consistently fails black Americans. Here’s how:http://bit.ly/2HO5CZc

Maybe. Live in different city but was out of town & let my license plates expire - totally on me. Got home late @ night & found 2 tickets on windshield (4 days) - Left note that I'd been gone but would renew & pay tickets next day. Next day, ticket #3. (in 6 days) Seriously?

$150 in 6 days - necessary? IDK... But sometimes some people are prayed upon. I had the money to pay but if I hadn't? My city has no quotas, this was just a jerk being a jerk. People deserve a chance to do right. We all make mistakes.

This kind of thing goes on nationwide. State Attorney's General should be called to task for this payday loan style traffic fining set up.

What’s ridiculous is people speeding and running red lights and then getting mad when they get tickets. This isn’t rocket science: don’t speed and don’t run red lights. Driving isn’t a right, it’s a privilege. Follow the laws and you won’t get tickets.

Predators always identify those least able to defend themselves to prey upon. Disgraceful that governmentals units join in the carnage. Happened in Ferguson and many other low income areas. Time for a revolution.
