As a MAT specialist, I take umbrage w this article. I give the author credit for sharing his story, but it's irresponsible to present Suboxone Rx as permanent (this is a great fear for a lot of reluctant clients) when it's meant to be a temp solution to support tapered detox.

That's the ultimate goal/best outcome, but not the reality of addiction as a chronic disease. Some taper off & lead productive lives; some taper, relapse, get back on; some still use but are more stable than otherwise would be w/out med. Everyone's experience & recovery is diff.

As a therapist in the field of MAT for over a decade, yes, variety in recovery methods should be encouraged. However, given that one of the biggest barriers for clients starting Sub Tx is a fear of needing it for life, publicizing narratives that fit that story can be damaging.
-
I think he's just telling his story & being honest. He says his goal is to be off Subs one day but is also realistic about about where he is in the process. Times of change (moving to Germany, new classes) isn't best time to taper so it makes sense he'd wait until he's settled.
