“Ignorant voters” are often blamed for our political woes
.
But imo ignorance isn’t really the *source* of the problem.
(Since ignorance is *itself* caused by lack of incentive to know. Or incentive to mis-know.)https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1179054427094650880 …

Which makes Hanson’s concern a bit of a misnomer. (An instance of the more general fallacy, discussed here: https://twitter.com/moshe_hoffman/status/1167288599735361536?s=21 …)

One reason this is misleading: As Jesse Shapiro and Matt Gentzkow’s research on media slant shows: it’s largely demand driven. Just one piece of evidence people are *strategically* misinformed. (Ignorance isn’t causing our politics. Our politics is causing our ignorance!)

One way Hanson’s concern misleads us: Try to fix the problem by making it easier for people to become informed. That should solve the problem, right? (Like when the internet was invented? Or when people gained access to multiple newspapers, or news channels?)

(Blaming “ignorance” is like blaming “partisanship”. Here’s a thread that takes down that argument: https://twitter.com/Moshe_Hoffman/status/1024118352397127680?s=20 ….)

But also illustrates a fallacy endemic in the psych literature. 1/x https://twitter.com/nytopinion/status/1023589228456886272?s=20 …Prikaži ovu nit1 reply 1 proslijeđeni tweet 0 korisnika označava da im se sviđaPrikaži ovu nit
(Wondering why we don’t have incentive to know political facts & do have incentive to mis-know: consider how lil our welfare directly depends on accurate beliefs in this domain, & how much it depends on coalitional pressures. <—imo *only* way to grasp voter beliefs & behavior.)
